Voice of Earth

Unemployment and poverty are large problems amongst the hilltribes. The Voice of Earth Clay Workshop produces decorative clay whistle pendants and gives employment for up to twelve people between harvest periods. The whistle is symbolically giving a voice to the local children who face so many disadvantages. The Workshop also serves as a stepping stone back into society for addicts who have completed the Anti-Drug Program. Profits from sale of the whistles fund children's activities and scholarships. The whistles can be purchased at on-site shop and our marketing site www.ebannok.com. The Voice Of Earth workshop embodies the spirit of the Mirror Art Group's strong, integrated, community-based activities. The villagers employed are trained in the skills required for the job--molding, firing, hand painting and glazing--taking the local clay and producing pieces of designer art. At the moment the workshop has two ranges of design in its catalogue: a variety of Thai wild bird models, and a range which takes its inspiration from Akha art and clothing designs. Both are ocarinas (clay whistles) and both are themed about symbols of a unified Thai and Akha culture. Of the price which the customer pays, 20% goes to the artist, 30% goes towards materials and project development, while the remaining 50% is given to the children. Special orders are available.
